BURGUNDY
Domaine Pierre Gelin, created in 1925 and now managed by Pierre-Emmanuel Gelin, grandson of the founder, is located in Fixin/Gevrey and offers the following AOCs:
Burgundy, Burgundy white, Burgundy Aligoté, Fixin, Fixin 1er Cru (including the well-known monopoly Clos Napoléon), Gevrey, Gevrey 1er Cru and the famous Chambertin Clos de Bèze.
Wine Spectator , who has been following Pierre Gelin for many years, respectively gave 95/98/95/97/95 pts to the Clos de Bèze 15/16/17/18/19. Proof if ever there was one of the consistency and quality of the estate from vintage to vintage. The entire range benefits from the same care by the estate’s team.
The Wine Advocate is of the same opinion. William Kelley : ” This 13-hectare domaine, today directed by Pierre-Emmanuel Gelin, is an excellent source that deserves to be better known. Organic farming, long cuvaisons of largely destemmed fruit and élevage in judicious percentages of new oak, supplied by Tonnellerie Rousseau, are the rudiments of an approach that yields reliably pure and supple wines that are elegant but flavorful in style. While Gelin possesses an enviable parcel of the Clos de Bèze—and produces a fine example—the insiders’ choice here is the excellent Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur, from a plot planted in 1964 with especially fine selections of Pinot Noir. »
The work in the vineyard is permanent throughout the year and the viticulture has been organic for several years without seeking certification. The harvest is largely destemmed and the wines are aged in oak barrels, with a percentage of new barrels varying according to the crus and vintages (giving a light oak) for 20 to 22 months. The wines are then bottled at the property and are only marketed after a year or two of storage in the estate’s cellars.
The wines of the estate could be summed up in 3 words: finesse, purity and length.
