BURGUNDY
Located where the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune meet, the Pernand-Vergelesses vineyard is the only one to present the entire range of vintages in both white and red wines: Grand Cru, 1er Cru, Village and Burgundy.
Christine Dubreuil, since 1991 at the head of the estate founded in 1879 , brilliantly manages the vagaries of vintages and the winemaking process in order to make the most of what the vine can give.
Her daughter Clémentine joined her in 2019, continuing the family tradition.
Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine takes advantage of the region’s noble grape varieties (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) to compose the range of its 20 appellations, from village Burgundy to the prestigious Premier Cru and ending with the rare Grand Cru. Although the estate operates vineyards as far south as Volnay and Pommard, much of their production is centered around Pernand, including excellent sites on the hillside of Corton Grand Cru, as well as the emblematic Premier Cru of Savigny-les-Beaune : Les Vergelesses. In fact, in addition to their 0.7ha of Chardonnay planted in Corton Charlemagne, their Pinot Noir is planted in the best plots of Corton GC : Clos du Roi at the top of the Corton hill, Les Bressandes to the south-east and the Perrières to the south.
The reds are 100% destemmed before aging for 12 to 15 months in barrels, with around 35% new wood on the grands crus and around 15% maximum on the rest of the range.
Thier cultivating methods are environmentally friendly, the goal is to produce a rich and healthy harvest whilst ensuring the sustainability of our soils. The treatments and spraying are reasoned, soils are tilled in order to maintain maximum natural balance of our vineyards. Harvesting is carried out by hand and sorted, maturity is checked upon arrival at the winery.
Neil Martin (Wine Advocate then Vinous) who visits the estate every year has this to say: “Christine is an expert in winemaking, and it is still an address which, in my opinion, produces underrated wines and deserves a wider audience. If you haven’t yet discovered his wines, do it ! ”
In January 2024, he also said this : “Following the strong showings of 2022s from my previous two visits at Bize and Chandon des Briailles, the pressure was on for Dubreuil-Fontaine to maintain the momentum. These wines did. In fact, after many years of tasting at this address, I felt a step up in the quality of precision and finesse. Having been hit hard in 2021, these 2022s exuded freshness and typicité at a level not reached before. The sweet spots are yet another excellent Pernand-Vergelesses lle de Vergelesses, a fantastic, highly seductive Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru. I never expected the Aloxe-Corton Les Vercots to deliver such elegance”
